Brian Herrin: Midnight Crooner or Honorary Raccoon?

Here at Raccoon Engineering, we monitor the world closely—especially after sundown. So when we kept spotting a certain Iowan named Brian Herrin roaming the night, gently strumming his guitar under the moonlight like some sort of woodland troubadour, we had to ask the obvious:

Is Brian Herrin… a raccoon?

Let’s review the evidence.

1. He Travels at Night

Real raccoons know: the snacks are fresher, the traffic’s quieter, and the dumpsters are less defended. Brian Herrin, Iowa’s nocturnal songsmith, gets it. While the rest of the world snoozes, Brian glides through the shadows, guitar case in hand—probably stuffed with chords, old setlists, and at least one granola bar.

2. He Makes Mysterious Sounds

Brian’s voice is smooth, soulful, and eerily soothing—like the satisfied coo of a raccoon who just found a perfectly untouched pizza box. We’ve gathered more than once around his porch concerts, paws clasped in front of our fuzzy bellies, swaying to the rhythm of his moonlit melodies.

3. He Avoids Daylight Like It Owes Him Money

Classic raccoon behavior. We’ve spotted him at Casey’s, squinting into the sun like someone who definitely just woke up in a canoe. We respect the hustle.

4. He’s Always on the Move

Much like us when the porch light comes on, Brian has a gift for disappearing just as someone says, “Hey, what kind of peanut butter do you use on those lyrics?” From backyard gigs to small-town bars to the inside of your shed (allegedly for acoustics), Brian is a blur in the night.

But Who Is Brian Herrin?

When he’s not impersonating a raccoon, Brian Herrin is a classically trained singer-songwriter based in Iowa, originally from Illinois. He’s opened for major acts like The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Vertical Horizon, Tonic, Carly Rae Jepsen, Sister Hazel, CLOVERTON, and Jordan St. Cyr—a résumé that clearly proves he’s got more range than a raccoon in a campground.

In 2008, he co-founded the Des Moines-based pop-rock band Decoy, releasing two albums and touring extensively until 2015. These days, he performs solo throughout the Midwest and has a new album coming in 2025—which we assume will feature at least one ode to late-night snack runs.

His recent singles include:

  • Coming Home” (2022)

  • It Goes Like This” (2021)

  • Wishing Well” (2018)

He’s also been known to cover artists like Shania Twain, Otis Redding, and Cory Asbury, but never once has he tried to cover his tracks—just like a raccoon dragging an entire bag of chips into the forest.

Verdict:
We’re not saying Brian Herrin is a raccoon.
We’re just saying… if we ever need a midnight serenade while scavenging for nachos behind a gas station, we know who to call.

Welcome to the den, Brian.
